Understanding the Mystery
Understanding the Mystery
To understand the mystery, the hidden wisdom of God, we need two main things. We need the Map (Bible) to show us where the treasure is and we need the Compass (Holy Spirit) to interpret the Map for us.
If you seek [Wisdom] as for silver and search for skillful and godly Wisdom as for hidden treasures, Then you will understand the reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of [our omniscient] God. [Prov. 1:7.]
Proverbs 2:4-5 (AMP)
We need the Word of God and we need the Spirit of God.
My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.
Proverbs 4:20-22 (KJV)
We must fill our ears, eyes and heart with the Word of God, but even if we memorise the Bible it will not help us apart from the Holy Spirit. We also need the Spirit to give us the revelation. Paul prayed the following prayer for the believers at Ephesus.
I do not cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers. [For I always pray to] the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, that He may grant you a spirit of wisdom and revelation [of insight into mysteries and secrets] in the [deep and intimate] knowledge of Him, By having the eyes of your heart flooded with light, so that you can know and understand the hope to which He has called you, and how rich is His glorious inheritance in the saints (His set-apart ones), And [so that you can know and understand] what is the immeasurable and unlimited and surpassing greatness of His power in and for us who believe, as demonstrated in the working of His mighty strength,
Ephesians 1:16-19 (AMP)
This prayer is a powerful Holy Spirit inspired prayer. It is a prayer specifically asking for the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, to give us insight, knowledge and understanding of the mysteries and secrets of God. It would be very wise to memorise this prayer and to pray it for yourself and others. As we read the word together with the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, we enter into the word and the word enters into us and the Spirit causes the eyes of our hearts will be flooded with light.
The entrance and unfolding of Your words give light; their unfolding gives understanding (discernment and comprehension) to the simple.
Psalms 119:130 (AMP)
In 1992 I read a book by an American preacher, who challenged his whole congregation to memorise the prayer in Ephesians 1 and pray it every day for three months for themselves, their family, their friends and the congregation. He explained that ten years later they were still feeling the effects of those three months of prayer. I decided to do the same. I memorised the prayer, even though I didn’t really understand it, and I began to pray it for myself. I wrote out the whole prayer on a poster and put it up against the wall opposite my bed so that every time I lay on my bed I would see the prayer. I also marked all the keywords in the prayer and searched for scriptures to help me understand the prayer. I prayed the prayer continuously in the beginning; later although I didn’t pray it every day I still continued to pray it for myself and others regularly. One evening 14 years later, while praying the prayer again, I realised how God had been answering the prayer by giving me knowledge, understanding of His plan and purpose.
I would like to challenge you to also memorise this prayer and continue praying it for yourself, your family, your friends, your congregation, your church leaders and your missionaries. We will return to this prayer and the prayer in the third chapter, but now let’s pray the following:
“Father, You are the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, You are the Father of glory, I pray that You would give me the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of You: That the eyes of my understanding may be enlightened; that I may know what is the hope of Your calling to me, and what is the riches of the glory of Your inheritance in us Your saints. Reveal to me the exceeding greatness of Your power in and for us who believe, according to the working of Your mighty power, that same power which You exerted in Christ, when You raised Him from the dead, and set Him at Your own right hand in the heavenly places…”
Our Father has given you eyes to see and ears to hear, now expect the Holy Spirit to reveal hidden truths to you!
