no vision

Where there is no vision, the people perish: Proverbs 29:18a (KJV)

Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint (NIV)

A nation without God’s guidance is a nation without order (GNB)

When people do not accept divine guidance, they run wild (NLT)

Without a Vision is a people made naked (YLT) (See also footnote in KJV)

Notice how various Bible translations show the consequences of a people without vision…perish, cast off restraint, without order, run wild, made naked.

Without the knowledge of the prize or the treasure, there will be no careful searching. If we do not see or know about the ultimate goal in life, then what is the point? Without God’s vision people will cast off restraint, be stripped of all dignity and run wild. Without understanding God’s purpose people will join the disillusioned and say: “let us eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we die!”

BACKGROUND:
In the days of Eli and his sons we find a very similar description of a people without vision. At this point in her history, the people of Israel have already come out of bondage. They have passed through the wilderness and have entered into the promised land of Canaan. The tabernacle of Moses has been set up in a place called Shiloh and for approximately 400 years the nation has been led by a number of Judges. Eli was the high priest and one of the last judges of Israel. His sons, Hophni and Phinehas, operated as priests in the tabernacle and the prophet Samuel was still a young child who served God before Eli.

QUESTIONS:
How did Eli’s lack of vision directly affect his sons and the nation?
What could Eli have done differently?
Discuss the consequences for his family and for the nation.
Man was designed to follow God’s path and pursue God’s vision. Our purpose is found in His purpose. Our vision is found in His vision.

READ: Gen 3:1-7(KJV)

QUESTIONS:
What was man’s focus before eating of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil?
What was desirable about the tree of knowledge?
If man was originally designed to pursue God’s vision, how did this change when they ate of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil?
When their eyes opened to worldly wisdom, what did their eyes close to?
In light of the 5 translations of Proverbs 29:18, discuss the consequences for Adam’s family/descendants.

Where there is no vision from God the people will always wander down a purposeless path that meanders through the emptiness of self gratification and eventually lead to destruction. By departing from God’s way and God’s design mankind has stripped himself of who he is meant to be and is no longer clothed in God’s glory, but naked and shameful.

Where there is no vision the people perish, but were there is vision, God’s vision, there is life. Abundant life, just as God originally intended! It is God’s desire that we should see His vision, be clothed in glory, be led by His Spirit and enjoy abundant life.
